I had my detailed scan (also called anomaly scan) yesterday (21+6) and
believe me when I say that I was nervous. I did sleep well, but I am
always so tired so I am not surprised. But in the morning I only had
some orange juice - I was too nervous to have a proper breakfast. My
husband drove me crazy - he is never on time and I am very punctual...
We said we'd leave 7:15 and 7:14 he decided he needed the loo and we
didn't leave until half past. He always does that. Luckily traffic
wasn't too bad and we made it with 10 minutes to spare (traffic can be
a nightmare so this is not a case of me being paranoid).
First I got my husband to drop off my sharps bin with all my needles
from the IVF treatment in the Infertility Clinic. I forgot to bring
them last time I was there and I didn't want to walk in being
obviously pregnant. I know some women might see it as positive to see
that some fellow patient was successful, but I remember that the sight
of every pregnant woman was like a stab into my heart - it didn't
matter how they got there - they arrived. So he dropped it off for me.
The prenatal care clinic is next door to the Infertility Centre so
this was our next stop. I was the first to register as reception just
opened when we walked in and then it was time to wait. I had some
water and read a book, my husband played on his mobile, the baby
kicked once or twice but otherwise was still a little sleepy.
We didn't have to wait long until we were called in. The sonographer
explained that she'd look at the screen first and then turn it so we
can see. And that she was checking if the baby was healthy.
It only took a few minutes until she turned the screen and I
completely forgot about my darling husband on the chair next to me. I
was entranced by looking at my baby. The little one didn't like the
scanning! As soon as it started she began kicking about and wriggling!
The sonographer had a job to get a still picture to do the checks!
Anyway, she checked the face, the heart, the spine, the brain, the
abdomen, the liver, hands, arms, feet, legs ... She struggled getting
a clear picture of the lower spine for a while and I started to worry,
but then the baby twisted and everything looked fine. She said there
was nothing to worry about from what they can see. She also measured
the little one and had no concerns with any measurements.
Unfortunately the little one is in breach position. But it still has
time to change, so she'll hopefully do that.
She didn't say about the gender so I asked at the end if she could
tell. She said they don't guarantee as there is always a risk that
they are wrong, but she could have a look for me.
'No dangly bits' was her statement. Even though I was so convinced
that I have a little boy (I can now reveal that I was going to call
him Brendan) it is a little girl! Both me and my husband were
surprised because I had been so convinced it'd be a boy, but both of
us are happy with either. I actually do get quite excited now that it
is a girl. It's nice for a girl to have a girl... And she'll probably
be a Daddy's girl anyway! My husband doesn't mind either way neither.
So right now I can't stop smiling. My baby is healthy and that's all
that matters. I can start doing the proper shopping - like a buggy and
a cot and a changing table and all the other things we still need.
In some respect my husband is quite relieved (even though surprised)
that it is a girl because the nursery room is currently pink and he
now won't have to redecorate. We'll just have to get used to saying
'she' rather than 'he' now!
And we have to think more about girl names. The boys name was quite
easy - I only had 5 names on my list which were in closer
consideration. But the girls name - I have a massive list so I have to
reduce it down and then run past my dear husband.
It's getting real now. I kept waiting for fate to come back and haunt
me for thinking we can overcome infertility. I felt much better when
the 12 weeks were over. And now that the mid-pregnancy scan is over I
feel massively better again. It seems that everything will go well
after all.
I'm going to be the mommy of a little girl!!!! 126 days to go. And -
if I get my will (which I probably won't) 54 more working days until I
am on holiday followed by maternity leave!
